Vice & Virtue: Sensuality and Sin in Art

Vice & Virtue: Sensuality and Sin in Art

NYC Artist Jeremy Penn Explores the Divinity of Immorality

What is sin, exactly? From an early age, we’re trained to recognize wrong-doing and bad behavior. It is ingrained into our psyche by our parents, our teachers, our neighbors and our friends. Most of us, when quizzed, would state that we understand what sin is, and what it means to be sinful. But how well do we actually comprehend the nature of naughtiness? More to the point, do we secretly take delight in delicious devilry?

Vice & Virtue Opening in Toronto

Vice & Virtue Opening in Toronto

In Vice & Virtue Jeremy chose to blend modernity with pervading sexual attitudes. He has deliberately referenced the bold, brash colors of graffiti – as it’s so often on our street corners and alleyways that we find truth in art; unashamed representations of sex and sin. The viewer is not only confronted with a deliberately thought-provoking word, they’re forced to see themselves as part of the image, through their reflection in the piece itself.

Power of the Unknowable: The Shock of Anonymity in Art – Jeremy Penn

Power of the Unknowable: The Shock of Anonymity in Art – Jeremy Penn

Artist Jeremy Penn Paints Fashion Icon Anna Wintour

Many of my paintings focus on the power of the human gaze. There’s much that can be conveyed through the eyes; from open defiance to coy submissiveness. I’ve always found it fascinating how a simple stare can communicate so much; and how it has the capacity to hold us in thrall.

However, art, as with so many other things in life, is sometimes as much about absence as it is presence. Whilst a confident gaze has the ability to control, manipulate and intimidate, sometimes the unknowable stare, concealed behind a pair of sunglasses, is every bit as powerful.

Narcissism and Art

Narcissism and Art

There’s nothing new about narcissism; in either human evolution or art.

Since time immemorial, we have been captivated by the sight our own image. The first mirrors, made of polished obsidian, date from as early as 6000 BC; remarkably, it took mankind a further 2500 years to get round to inventing the wheel. Apparently it would seem that even then, the image took precedence over all else; and that appearances were of the utmost importance.

Facing the Beast Within: The Power of Animal Instinct in Sexuality

In the 21st century, we like to imagine that our approach to sexuality has changed significantly since the days of our ‘cave men’ ancestors.

Indeed, ask any man or woman about sexuality, and they are likely to refute the idea that their sexual behavior is anything like that of ancient Homo sapiens; which, according to the Swiss writer, Johann Bachofen (a highly influential writer in the field); was chaotic, aggressive and promiscuous.

These days, with our courtship rituals; online dating, nightclubs and bars, marriage and monogamy, we take pride in our status as superior, sophisticated beings; our behavior a world apart from the crude, animal techniques of our ancient relatives.

The Immortal Icon: Abraham Lincoln, Once a Man, Now a Metaphor?

The Immortal Icon: Abraham Lincoln, Once a Man, Now a Metaphor?

I’ve always been captivated by the concepts of transience and permanence in both art and in nature.

Perhaps that’s why I’m so often drawn to the beauty of women; to that state of physical perfection that is, in terms of the passage of time, all too fleeting. The state of beauty, which inevitably only lasts for a matter of years in real life, can be captured and trapped in an artistic work; preserved forever and given new perspective and power.

Art: A Multifaceted Gem

There are many forms of Art. It surrounds us on a daily basis, on a number of levels, and isn’t just restricted to the paintbrush and canvas. Every day often starts with an artistic decision as we open our wardrobe and peer in at the clothes inside. ‘What shall I wear today’ is often a sub-conscious way of saying ‘who shall I be today’. As Art is transformative, so too, is Fashion.

The Chameleonic in Art; Altered Images and Shifting Perspectives

Artist Jeremy Penn Paints Portrait of Rock Icon David Bowie

A question that has always fascinated me has been that of longevity in art.

What is it that makes an artist endure? What is it that causes an artist to turn from a painter into a legend; that causes his or her works to be pored over, discussed and debated for decades, or even centuries after their death?

The Power of Women

As you all know, I am endlessly fascinated by powerful women; forceful females who dare to express themselves fearlessly; and who have a true sense of themselves and complete comfort in their own skins.

Brigitte Bardot: Redefining Sexuality - Artist Jeremy Penn

I get asked, on a fairly regular basis, why I choose to paint Brigitte Bardot with such regularity. “Just what is it about Bardot that draws you to her repeatedly in your art?” To which I generally reply; “People say God created women. However, that’s impossible, because Bardot proves that God is actually a woman herself.” This may, as a first impression, appear as a mere glib comment, a humorous statement of my admiration for a woman of obvious physical beauty. However, as with all my work, and with my artistic muses, there is often a far deeper meaning beyond the superficial.

An Oasis of Inspiration

It is not uncommon for an artist to find inspiration from a single individual. Throughout history, artists have used specific models, occasionally almost obsessively; using their representations to delve into the contours and lines that make up the figure and face of their inspiration, and also using their art to explore and reveal the psychology that lies behind the physical.
