Since time immemorial, we have been captivated by the sight our own image. The first mirrors, made of polished obsidian, date from as early as 6000 BC; remarkably, it took mankind a further 2500 years to get round to inventing the wheel. The state of beauty, which inevitably only lasts for a matter of years in real life, can be captured and trapped in an artistic work; preserved forever and given new perspective and power.
